After scoring some gold medals at the summer Olympic Games in 2012 in London, Gabrielle "Gabby" Douglas may not have 99 problems, but her dad who is one.
For much of the Olympic journey by Gabby, his father was out of the picture. His mother, Natalie Hawkins, said Gabby grew up as a "single mother", but that's not exactly the whole story.
Gabby's father is Sgt Timothy Douglas of the Air National Guard and is currently in the midst of a divorce from Gabby's mother.
There were a lot of details about why the couple is divorcing, but Gabby showed up slightly in recent interviews about what his family history was as ... And, unfortunately, is a story in which her father only made cameo appearances.
As a military man, Sergeant Douglas was in and out of his daughter's life as he went on several deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to the Daily Mail.
While one might expect that the story of a father who complains that the war would leave his family full of nothing but pride and patriotism, which is not the case. Sgt Douglas apparently wasn't in step with its maintenance, as Gabby revealed to The New York Post reported.
"It was really hard for us to grow — my dad had left us, so he was not really in the picture anymore," Douglas, 16, said yesterday.
"So my mom had before all these bills. My dad didn't really pay child support. He was short [the money]. It was definitely hard to part with her, and she had to take care of me and the rest of my brothers. '
In addition to the lack of funding, concerns about security and the life of his father, Gabby left conflicted about forging ahead with his gymnastics career, said his sister.
Earlier this year, she twisted his ankle at the Pacific Rim Championships in March. The absence of his father and his injury caused her to contemplate to quit smoking.
"It was pretty dramatic. She really, really looked very serious about it, "said Gabby's sister, Arielle Hawkins. Forged ahead anyway, competing with a heavy weight on his heart.
Is there a conclusion quite happy here. Just before she went to London for the games, Gabby was surprised by his father at trials in June.
Brought the flag of the United States with a message on it that said, "Go, Gabby Douglas! Love, Dad, family and friends. " (see below)
Since I'm Gabby's parents divorce, things could be confused for a bit of the family Douglas, but hopefully Gabby and her father can build the close connection of father-daughter they deserve in the near future.
